About TrikeTech
Eleven years ago while pastoring a church situated in the middle of a fifty mile paved bike path in Iowa, I became an even more avid bicycle rider. On one of many trips to Wisconsin to ride the beautiful Rail to Trail bike paths there I saw a recumbent trike. I loved the fact that this beautiful machine could be ridden with none of the pain associated with conventional bikes, and being able to enjoy the scenery without having to worry about balancing or running into a pothole and winding up on my head was very appealing. But, the $5,000 price was out of my budget. So I bought a frame from an veteran builder and engineered my own trike.
This recumbent trike had 24 speeds, front hub brakes, a comfortable fiberglass seat, Ackerman steering geometry, and performed so well it would out corner all of the factory trikes I had a chance to compare it to. The second time the trike was on the bike trail a man made me an offer I could not refuse and the company “Granny’s Touring Trikes” was born, I started building trikes in my spare time. As people found us, trikes were built in many different models for people with different kinds of physical challenges as well as for folks who liked to scream around corners and go 50 miles per hour down mountains.
After several hundred trikes and a great learning curve, my church responsibilities grew to the point that the trike building had to be put aside.
However, after retirement last year and a lot of research, I discovered that the technology in small electric motors, controllers for them and batteries had made great strides, so I changed the company name to “TrikeTech” and began building electric trikes. This gave an opportunity to incorporating all of the features that I would want in my personal electric trike, such as “Power on Demand” so the rider had complete control over the amount of energy that wanted to expend and the speed they wanted to travel. “Power on Demand” allows even a beginning rider to keep up with pack on the very fun organized bike rides, while riding with more accomplished friends, or just covering more ground and seeing more sites.
My latest design, the RetroClassic, incorporates the basic classic design from the conventional, but very unstable original trikes, a design which is surprisingly still around, with the low center of gravity and great performance of the recumbent trikes I had been making. By putting the motor in the front hub, giving the front fork a few degrees more rake, mounting the battery pack very low, lengthening the wheelbase and engineering a low seating position between the rear wheels, I was able to duplicate the safety and performance standard of my conventional recumbent trikes.
The gently curving lines of the frame and spring suspension in the front fork are reminiscent of the beautiful Schwinn Bikes of yesterday. While the extreme modern rake to the front and low rider seating position affords the RetroClassic a unique class and with a style of its own.
I am having a great time riding this work of art trike, I hope you will enjoy one personally.
